The name Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma describes how the tumor grows, where it is found, and what kinds of cells give rise to the tumor.
DIPG is a fast-growing, high grade glioma that usually effects children ages 4-11.
The prognosis is poor for DIPG with an average survival age of 8-12 months.
The cause of DIPG is unknown.
Some symptoms are :
DIPG tumors press on and interfere with the functions of these nerves leading to the weakness.
These tumors can also cause increased pressure within the skull. which can cause complaints of persistent headaches and also cause nausea and vomiting.
When diagnosis is made the patient will start steroids to decrease swelling, to help with symptoms. Then radiation will start, currently that is the standard treatment. No chemo has shown to help DIPG.
